Variety

February 25 2013

Nutrition, exercise and supplements are ALL fundamental parts of accomplishing a goal of health. When progression stops, or we hit plateaus, we must reexamine our constructed plans and begin to incorporate variation.

Variety is also an essential component in overall health.  I have learned that body adapts quickly to nutrition, workouts and supplements. Therefore change is necessary in addressing any goal or issue at hand. Ensuring variety in your workouts, nutrition and supplements can help you continually progress and achieve new goals.

In my line of work, one of the most common mistakes I see many healthy people making is failing to incorporate variety into their routines.  Even more, I find many of my new clients have not changed their workouts, nutrition and/or supplement plans in 3 to 6 or even 8 to 12 months.

Think your routine may need some variation?  Try adding some of these changes to your routine:

Workouts:

Keep it simple and just do the opposite of what you are currently doing. If you are a person who follows a 4 sets of 12 reps plan. Try 12 sets at 4 reps.  If you do cardio everyday for 30 minutes, try doing tabata style workouts instead. Tabata training is a killer and very effective training method that is quick and easy to follow. Pick an exercise like jump squats. Do as many as you can for 20 seconds, then stop for 10 seconds. Repeat 20 second sets 8 times, making sure to give 100% effort every single set.

Nutrition:

Are you currently eating the same 5-10 foods weekly? After reviewing food logs from some of my clients, I see the same common foods; eggs, beef, chicken, broccoli, tilapia, apples, asparagus, milk, oatmeal and toast. If these are all too familiar, try adding in foods like duck, bison, venison, wild boar, bok choy, leeks, black or red quinoa, and watermelons. Finding new recipes and experimenting with new foods can help add more flavor and excitement to your weekly meals.

Supplements:

People do not need to use the same brands of the same supplements for years. Find 3 multivitamins, greens/superfoods, and fish oils and rotate them every time. Do not be afraid to change the brand name or strength. Changing things around like fish oils, multi vitamins, greens powder can help you absorb different nutrients into your body.

So, don’t be afraid of change.  As Albert Einstein once noted, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Maybe he was on to something…

Have a fun time achieving your goals,
